Sydney Town Hall Projections

The Sydney Town Hall Projection System is a permanent installation designed to support ongoing cultural storytelling across one of Australia’s most recognised civic buildings. Positioned at the heart of the city, the system enables the building to shift and respond over time, carrying different stories, messages, and moments into the public realm.

The Town Hall is both an active civic space and an iconic landmark, demanding a solution that could operate reliably within a complex urban environment, and the creative expertise to design and animate for a complex heritage structure.

illuminart designed and delivered the projection system, including technical infrastructure, playback control, and calibration across the façade. Animation content was also developed to establish the visual language of the site, celebrate within the event briefs, demonstrating how the system could be used for future programming.

The result is a long-term cultural platform rather than a single event. The system allows the City to commission new works, respond to civic occasions, and activate the building in ways that remain relevant over time. It shifts projection from a temporary overlay into an embedded part of how the space communicates with the public.
