Hive Illuminated: Light, Motion and Storytelling at Hive Tasmania

A Pop-Up Projection Activation in Ulverstone

On a winter evening in June 2025, illuminart stories in light brought a vibrant splash of art and motion to Hive Tasmania. This ephemeral projection activation transformed the southern face of the Hive building into a canvas of digital storytelling — momentarily animating the precinct with shimmering colour, animation and a glimpse of what’s possible after dark.

The projection unfolded from Light Horse Park, capturing the attention of passers-by and adding a surprising element of creativity to the everyday streetscape.

Exploring Surfaces, Senses and Surroundings

As the sun set, additional small-scale activations included a rear-projection artwork visible through an upper window along Alexandra Road — offering a subtle invitation to enter Hive through a glowing portal of textile and light.

The projection elements were designed to play with the building’s architectural features, explore interaction with the surrounding space, and test the atmosphere that light can evoke in an otherwise quiet precinct.

Moments that Caught the Eye

Despite the chill and occasional rain, curious locals stopped to observe and photograph the transformation. For many, it was their first experience seeing the Hive precinct animated in this way — with bold scale and ambient presence. We were even sent photographs and messages from residents who could see Hive in the far distance from their homes on hilltops.

A Glimpse of Possibility

This pop-up activation offered a fleeting yet powerful example of how digital projection can enrich public space, celebrate architecture, and invite a new kind of cultural interaction.

Whether viewed from the street, the car park, or through the windows of Hive, this night-time moment proved that even a single evening of light can spark imagination.
