Illuminate the Flow: Goondiwindi Water Towers

Stories in Light, Anchored in Community

The Goondiwindi water towers have become the canvas for a unique and enduring public art installation – Illuminate the Flow – brought to life by Lanescape Goondiwindi in collaboration with illuminart, and proudly supported by Goondiwindi Regional Council and local sponsors.

Launched in October 2024 as part of the annual Lanescape Festival, this projection-based light artwork is a five-year commitment to cultural celebration, community wellbeing, and night-time placemaking. Every evening from sunset, the towers come alive with animated visual stories created by local artists, including Euraba Artists, the Goondiwindi Photography Club, Rachel Walker, Ian Tremuwen, and Tim Bateup, with animation and digital support by Roxana Kingston, Tracey Jensen, and illuminart.

A Model for Regional Innovation

Developed using illuminart’s Pi system (Projected Illumination / Placemaking Interface), this installation is a shining example of how scalable, programmable lighting technology can be tailored to deliver deeply local impact. From the initial artistic concept to its realisation, the project was shaped by the values of community resilience, post-disaster recovery, and regional pride.

It is now a lasting platform for Goondiwindi to honour its culture, artists, and identity – and to welcome both locals and visitors into an ever-evolving story told through light.
