Biography
Susanne Wegener is an artist, animator, and mentor working with illuminart across regional projects nationally. Based on the Eyre Peninsula, her practice centres on storytelling through animation and projection, with a particular focus on historical narratives, family stories, and community-held knowledge.
Susanne began working with illuminart as a mentee during Boston Bay Broadcast in 2015. Through that process, she developed her practice within large-scale public projection, leading to ongoing collaboration on projects across Australia. She later became a leading creative contributor within her own region, supported through programs such as Port to Port, where she worked closely with local communities to develop and present place-based stories.
Her animation style is bold and expressive, often drawing on watercolour, illustration, and archival imagery, which she brings to life through projection in public spaces. Susanne’s work is known for its warmth, clarity, and ability to honour lived experience while engaging broad audiences.
Alongside her creative practice, Susanne now plays an active mentoring role within illuminart, supporting emerging artists and new team members as they develop skills in animation, projection, and collaborative community-based work. Her mentoring reflects illuminart’s commitment to long-term capacity building and shared creative growth.
Susanne holds a Bachelor of Creative Arts and Industries, specialising in Animation, and continues to expand her practice through ongoing learning and experimentation in response to the needs of each project and community.
