Yarta Purtli: Launch of the Port Augusta Cultural Precinct

“Yarta Purtli” is a Nukunu word meaning Place of the Stars.

Cindi Drennan, senior artist and director at illuminart, was born in Port Augusta and was thrilled to be invited to collaborate on a projection and sound performance to open the new Cultural Precinct, held on the 20th March 2009.

The work consisted of imagery to accompany the local stages project Carcophony, directed by composer Matthew Timmis and involving local hotrods each beaming a part of the soundscape into the park from their car’s boom box.

This was followed by an architectural projection, interweaving imagery from a previous project “Crossroads of Australia” created in collaboration with local First Nation artist Aaron Stuart, leading into a colourful and playful array of imagery to celebrate the opening.

The project was supported by Mosaic AV, Country Arts SA and the Port Augusta City Council.
