This year the Lights of Lobethal Festival featured new projections and lantern displays to enhance the long running festival and transform the main street. After dark, animated window projection displays were presented at four sites along Main St Lobethal. These fun and quirky animations were based on scenes from Lobethal’s history, transformed by digital media artists into colourful projections.
The themes were inspired by Lobethal itself, which has a long background of self-sufficiency and traditional textile crafts. History and photos have been collected from residents and local historians by Megan Collins (heritage consultant for Illuminart), and these have been made available to all the artists working on the projects. The resulting colourful displays are hoped to give locals and residents alike a new experience and appreciation of the peaceful township.
Illuminart’s four projection sites were:
PRESS FOR PLAID an interactive window projection at the Old Service Station at upper Main St Lobethal. New media artist – Lachlan Tetlow-Stuart.
This projection uses historic black and white photographs of Lobethal pioneers as the starting point. Visitors can interact with the display, so that the historic garments are transformed into multi-coloured tweed, of the type made at the historic Onkaparinga woollen mill.
THE EXTRAORDINARY TRAVELS OF THE FAMILY PICNIC BLANKET at Graebers Auto Garage at 47 Main St. Animated by Jessica Foster. The Onkaparinga Woollen Mill was world famous for its woollen blankets, many of which were part of family life as picnic blankets. This animation is inspired by the Graebers garage that has stored many historic racing vehicles.
THE WOOLLEN MILL STORY at the windows of the Adelaide Hills Business and Tourism Office near the intersection of Woodside and Main Road. Animator – Lachlan Tetlow-Stuart. Historic black and white photos of the Woollen Mill in action, are interwoven with the modern colours of tweed.
100 YEARS at the Bierhaus, 3A Main St. Animator – Cindi Drennan. Inspired by the pioeneers of Lobethal’s self sufficiency, this playful animation shows the new Lobethal Lanterns interacting with historic photos of Lobethal, in a futuristic vision of self sufficiency.
