Until the early 1970’s, Marstons the Chandlers had a store on the corner of Lipson and St Vincent Streets. Although the site has gone, we have found many people in the area still talk about the store, which was famous for having South Australia’s first electric light, powered by a generator in the basement. And another famous building also long gone, was the magnificent Port Dock Railway Station… a huge stone building with cast iron posts, demolished in the 1980s.
At our projection tests tonight we incorporated some of the old photographs and texts about these vanished sites, contributed by local people who remember. Its fascinating to think what the area would be like if they were still here.
