Thanks to Fred at the Railway Hotel who introduced me to Julian and Neil, members of the Friends of the Paul McGuire Maritime Library… another little gem of information that has led to wonderful insights into the past and current workings of Port Adelaide.
The Friends of the Paul McGuire Maritime Library is an incorporated association which was established in 1981 to support the Paul McGuire Maritime Library in the State Library of South Australia. During World War II Paul McGuire served with naval intelligence and reached the rank of Commander, and during his life he was a writer of more than 30 works of fiction, verse, history, travel and politics, particularly interested in ships and the sea. After his death in 1978, his wife Margaret donated his collection of 180 books on maritime subjects, with funds for maintaining them, to establish the Paul McGuire Maritime Library at the State Library of South Australia. In 1980 she prompted the posthumous publication of a selection of his best poems.
