PROJECTION SCULPTURE ~ ILLUMINART®:

Projection sculpture by Illuminart® combines animated projection and advanced 3D structural design, and complements our work in building projection, architectural projection and immersive events.

We design and build to commission light sculptures, projection sculptures, and other audiovisual sets and structures. We also have a range of existing projection art installations and projection sculptures, from small-scale (1m x 1m) to larger structures.

What is projection sculpture?

Projection sculpture by Illuminart® combines audiovisual media mapped to conform to the shape of three-dimensional structures, sculptures and architectural forms. The technique of projection mapping to structures is also described as augmented sculpture, as the projected image may transform the sculpture with temporal and lighting illusions.

Highlights of our work in this area include:

Fractured Heart, a projection sculpture (2011) - backdrop to Gotye live performance during the 2011 ARIA Awards ceremony is a bespoke projection sculpture featuring animated pixel mapped animations based on the film clip for the song.
Shipshape - a mobile projection sculpture (2011) - first appearing in the the Port Festival 2011, this ship is a lantern, roving spectacle and has an integrated projection system. Shipshape is tourable / portable and available for tour to fesivals and events in Australia.
Projector Pods - projection sculpture (2010) - first appearing at Junction 2010, the pods are a weatherproof outdoor installation concealing projection systems. These sculptures appear regularly at our regional outdoor events.
Inter-arts residency with SANYO Oceania (2010-2011), supported by the Australia Council for the Arts and Mosaic AV. During the residency, led by multimedia artist Cindi Drennan, research and development was undertaken into projection lens technology, permanent and semi permanent installation, projection mapping, mobile projection and augmented sculpture.

Promise, a projection sculpture (2008) - twin six metre high structures composed of patchworked wedding dresses and lace on a portable/demountable steel framework, with integrated AV system.
