North Adelaide Wishing Tree / Community Arts in Place Training

In recognition of the important role community artists play in the development of healthy communities, Adelaide City Council developed a new intensive program of workshops designed to support artists to develop their community arts practice. As part of the Community Arts in Place project, experienced community artists Sandy Elverd and Cindi Drennan (illuminart) delivered workshops and provided intensive mentoring to 15 up and coming artists. As part of their training, these artists have engaged with real communities and developed community arts proposals for delivery in the North Adelaide and South East areas of the city. One of these projects – the Wishing Tree – was supported by mentor Cindi Drennan and technical support provided by illuminart for the installation.

The North Adelaide ‘Wishing Tree’ project invited the local North Adelaide community to voice their ideas, dreams and plans surrounding the future of the Melbourne Street area. These ‘wishes’ were placed into plastic bottles. The bottles were later hung and illuminated in a ‘wishing tree’ along Melbourne Street during late 2014.  The bottles were illuminated at night with interactive LED lights that responded to the presence of passers by.
